Yeni Üsküdar Mosque

Step off the ferry at Üsküdar and this is the complex immediately in front of you, hard against the square rather than set back from it. It is the Yeni Valide külliye, built by Ahmed III for his mother, Gülnûş Emetullah Sultan. Construction began on 23 Şâban 1120, which is 7 November 1708. The mosque inscription is dated 1122 in the Hijri calendar, 1710 in the Gregorian one, and the building opened for worship on 15 Muharrem 1123 — 5 March 1711. Yes. The prayer hall is square, with a flattened central dome carried on an eight-sided system and four half domes around it, and two minarets each with two balconies. Marble for the complex came from the Marmara islands. The calligraphy, Qur'anic verses and divine names in thuluth script, is the work of Hezarfen Mehmet Efendi. The piece nobody forgets is the tomb. Gülnûş Emetullah Sultan's türbe has no solid roof: the dome is a cage of bronze grilles between columns, open to the sky, so the grave lies under weather rather than under masonry. Yes. Twenty-five minutes. The mosque itself is quick — it is a single hall, and once you have stood under the dome and looked at the calligraphy there is no second room to move to. What earns the extra ten minutes is outside the door: the open tomb, which needs to be walked round rather than glanced at, and the sebil on the corner, which is easy to miss entirely because it faces the street rather than the courtyard. Photograph the tomb before the mosque. An open-topped türbe is a rare subject and the bronze grilles do something no dome can: at midday the lattice casts its own pattern across the interior, and shooting through a grille from outside frames the grave in metalwork. Get low and shoot up through the columns to catch the open sky above. The sebil wants a tight frame from the pavement opposite, one or two of its five faces filling the shot, late in the afternoon when the west light finds the bronze.
