Plan Orlando

Reviewed by Elena Voss · Roavina Travel Editor

Orlando is a collection of separate visitor districts rather than a single walkable resort city. Downtown has its own cultural and sports core, while the major theme-park areas sit southwest along different transport corridors. Winter Park, Mills 50, Audubon Park, Ivanhoe Village and other neighbourhoods add dining, museums and local streets beyond the resort zones. Plan each day around one district because cross-city transfers can consume substantial time.

How the city is laid out

Downtown Orlando and its surrounding neighbourhoods sit well north of the main theme-park corridor. International Drive forms another visitor axis, while the large resort complexes occupy separate sites farther southwest. Winter Park lies north of downtown and is a distinct city within the wider visitor destination. Treat the airport, downtown, International Drive and each resort area as separate zones rather than stops on one compact central route.

Getting around

Orlando combines commuter rail, public buses, hotel shuttles, taxis, rideshare services and a road network built for longer transfers. Walking works inside downtown, individual neighbourhoods and self-contained resort areas, but not between the principal visitor zones. Confirm whether accommodation provides an airport or park shuttle before arranging another transfer. Drivers should check current toll-road payment rules and allow extra time between geographically separate districts.

Common questions

How many days should I spend in Orlando?

A fixed stay length is not recorded. Count each major resort or theme-park day separately, then add time for downtown or the neighbourhoods you intend to visit.

Is downtown Orlando beside the theme parks?

No. Downtown and the main resort districts are separate zones. Plan transport between them instead of expecting to move between attractions on foot.

Can I visit Orlando without renting a car?

Yes, with planning. Public transport, hotel shuttles, taxis and rideshares serve the destination, but direct connections and travel times vary between separate visitor zones.

Does Orlando have walkable neighbourhoods?

Yes. Downtown, Winter Park, Mills 50, Audubon Park and Ivanhoe Village offer walkable local clusters, but they are not all adjacent to one another.

Should I check for a hotel shuttle?

Yes. Visit Orlando notes that many hotels and resorts provide airport shuttles. Confirm the exact route, booking requirement and operating schedule directly with the property.
