Milan Airport Transfers: M4, Train and Bus

Milan’s airport choice matters because the three airports have different onward routes. Linate (LIN) connects directly to the city on ATM’s M4 blue metro. Malpensa (MXP) has two Malpensa Express routes, to Milano Centrale and Milano Cadorna. Milan Bergamo Airport (BGY), at Orio al Serio, is 45 km from Milan and 5 km from Bergamo. M4 runs between Linate and San Cristoforo. At San Babila, change to M1; M4 also meets M2, M3 and suburban rail at other stations. Follow the terminal signs to the airport station. Malpensa Express has separate routes to Centrale and Cadorna. Choose Centrale for mainline rail and onward M2 or M3 connections; choose Cadorna for M1 or M2. BGY lists direct coach operators to Milano Centrale: Autostradale, Flibco, Orioshuttle and Terravision. Orioshuttle also serves Malpensa. ATB’s airport bus instead connects with Bergamo railway station and the city centre, so it is not a direct Milan service. ATM publishes a 12-minute M4 ride between Linate and Milan’s centre and about 30 minutes for the full San Cristoforo–Linate route. Malpensa Express lists about 37 minutes to Cadorna and about 50 minutes to Centrale. The Centrale train stops at Milano Bovisa and Milano Porta Garibaldi; the Cadorna route has its own stops. Autostradale publishes a 50–60-minute journey between BGY and Milano Centrale. Its Milan stop is Piazza Luigi di Savoia 1; airport buses stop in front of Arrivals. Compare the complete journey, not just the airport leg. From Centrale or Cadorna, check the final metro, tram or walk to your accommodation. Linate’s M4 accepts ATM’s Mi1–Mi3 ticket. The current published fare is €2.20 for 90 minutes; ATM lists a 24-hour ticket at €7.60 and a three-day ticket at €15.50. Mi1–Mi3 tickets are valid on M4 from terminus to terminus. Contactless pay-as-you-go also works on M4; follow ATM’s instructions and use the same card or device for the journey. Malpensa Express lists a full-leg adult one-way ticket at €15 and a child fare of €7.50 for ages 4–13. Its €25 adult return depends on the product: the digital 30-day return allows the return within 30 days, while the reloadable round-trip ticket is for same-day use. The rail operator sells tickets online, in the Trenord app, and at ticket offices, retailers and station machines. Some digital and reloadable airport tickets do not need validation; follow the ticket-specific instructions and choose the correct Milan station and airport terminal. Autostradale currently advertises online promotional fares of €9 one way and €18 return for BGY–Centrale. The page says these promotions do not apply to stop purchases, so treat them as online offers rather than guaranteed walk-up fares. The operator also lists a €5 child fare, but its page gives differing age wording in separate areas; confirm eligibility during booking. Luggage is included under the operator’s conditions. ATM says M4 runs every day from early morning until 00:30. It directs passengers to its app and live departure pages for exact departures from Linate and San Cristoforo. Malpensa Express publishes trains every 30 minutes on the Centrale route. Its current route pages list the regular first and last trains: from Malpensa, 05:25–23:25 to Centrale and 05:56–00:26 to Cadorna; from the Milan stations, 05:43–22:43 from Centrale and 04:57–23:27 from Cadorna. BGY lists several operators for Milano Centrale but does not promise one shared timetable. Autostradale lists service every 30 minutes and published operating windows of 00:55–23:55 from Centrale and 04:25–00:55 from the airport. For an online Autostradale booking, arrive at the stop at least 15 minutes before departure, as the operator requests. Malpensa’s two rail routes have different final departures. The published regular timetable shows the last train from Malpensa at 23:25 for Centrale and 00:26 for Cadorna. Trenord also published additional late weekend services for summer 2026, but that notice is seasonal and should not be treated as a year-round timetable. At BGY, coach hours belong to individual operators. Autostradale’s currently published airport window ends at 00:55, but that does not establish that a coach will match your flight. For Sunday or holiday travel, compare the airport leg and the onward Milan connection separately. At BGY, leave through Arrivals door 1 and use the taxis in the designated parking area. The airport taxi page confirms the rank location but publishes no fixed fare to Milan. Ask the licensed taxi service for the applicable charge instead of relying on an estimated price.
