Leopold Museum

The Leopold Museum houses the collection assembled over five decades by the ophthalmologist and collector Rudolf Leopold, sold to the Austrian state in 1994 and opened to the public in this purpose-built home inside the MuseumsQuartier in 2001.

The building, a white limestone cube designed by Ortner & Ortner, was conceived specifically to hold Leopold's collection, which is anchored by the largest single holding of Egon Schiele's work anywhere: around 42 paintings and roughly 180 works on paper.

Alongside Schiele, the museum holds significant works by Gustav Klimt, Oskar Kokoschka and Wiener Werkstätte design, making it one of the two central venues, with the Belvedere, for Austrian Expressionism in Vienna, and the collection remains closely associated with Rudolf Leopold's own eye for the period even after his death in 2010.

The Schiele galleries occupy the museum's core, tracing his short career from early academic training through the raw, angular figure studies that define his mature style before his death in 1918 at 28.

Gustav Klimt's Death and Life, one of his major late paintings, hangs in the museum's Klimt rooms alongside smaller works and landscapes.

Separate floors cover Austrian Expressionism more broadly and Wiener Werkstätte furniture and design objects, giving the museum a wider scope than a single-artist collection despite Schiele's dominance in its public image, and a basement level is used for rotating photography and print exhibitions drawn from the wider Leopold holdings.

One and a half to two and a half hours covers the Schiele and Klimt rooms plus a pass through the Wiener Werkstätte design floor.

A visitor focused only on the Schiele collection can move faster, since it is concentrated on one or two floors rather than spread across the whole building, though a large travelling exhibition on a lower floor can add another 30-45 minutes to that estimate, and the basement print galleries add a further 20 minutes for anyone who stops there too.

The museum sits inside the MuseumsQuartier complex, reached most directly from U2 Museumsquartier station, a two-minute walk through the main courtyard entrance on Museumsplatz.

Tram and bus routes along the Ring and Mariahilfer Straße stop within a five-minute walk of the Museumsplatz entrance, and U2/U3 Volkstheater station on the opposite side of the complex is a comparable alternative.

Schiele's work includes nude and sexually explicit studies, part of what made him a controversial and briefly imprisoned figure in his own lifetime; a visitor bringing children should be aware of this before entering the galleries.

The Schiele rooms are the most visited part of the museum and can be tightly packed around key paintings during peak hours.

Temporary exhibitions often carry their own, stricter photography rules than the permanent collection, so it is worth checking gallery by gallery, and bag-size restrictions at the cloakroom are stricter than at some other MuseumsQuartier venues.

Photography without flash is generally allowed in the permanent collection; special and travelling exhibitions frequently prohibit it outright, and staff enforce that distinction at the entrance to each room.

Outside, the white limestone cube against the Baroque stable wings of the wider MuseumsQuartier is the strongest exterior composition, best shot from the central courtyard in late-afternoon light when the stone picks up warm tones, and the cube's straight lines make it an easy subject to shoot square-on rather than at an angle, framed against the Enzis and the crowd below for scale.
