About Wasserturm
Wasserturm Favoriten is a historic water tower on Wienerberg Hill in Vienna’s 10th municipal district, Favoriten. The City of Vienna describes it as a prominent example of industrial historicism. Built in 1898/99, it supplied drinking water to higher-lying parts of the 10th and 12th districts. The Second Vienna Spring Water Main took over this role when it entered service in 1910, after which the tower was used only occasionally, including during maintenance shutdowns of that supply line.
The tower is 67 metres high including its weather vane. Inside, a sheet-steel reservoir holds approximately 1,000 cubic metres of water on a brick cylinder 25 metres above ground. A 203-metre spiral ramp follows the inner wall to the top; an external walkway at about 48 metres provides views over Vienna. Vienna Water comprehensively rehabilitated the building from 1988 to 1990, restoring roof ornaments with five-colour glazed tiles in the original style. Today the tower is used for exhibitions and cultural events. Guided tours are offered with exhibition openings and Water School events; the city says no other guided tours are currently available.
