About Jiaoshan

Jiaoshan is a low hill and historic island landscape in Zhenjiang, Jiangsu, rising from the Yangtze northeast of the city. The site is associated with river scenery, wooded slopes, and views across the surrounding waterways. Its best-known cultural landmark is Dinghui Temple, a Buddhist temple traditionally traced to the Eastern Han period and noted for its setting within the hill. East of the temple, Jiaoshan Beilin and Baomo Xuan preserve more than 400 historic Chinese stone inscriptions and steles in seal, clerical, regular, cursive, and running scripts. The most celebrated work is the Yiheming inscription, an important calligraphic monument known as the “king of steles.” Jiaoshan also contains the remains of an eight-gun artillery battery on the eastern slope, facing the river. Together, the hill, temple, inscriptions, and military remains make Jiaoshan a compact viewpoint and heritage stop focused on landscape and Chinese calligraphy.
