About Dawn

L’Aurore is a marble portrait by Auguste Rodin, conceived around 1895–1897. The work uses the features of Camille Claudel, continuing Rodin’s practice of giving an allegorical dimension to portraits of people close to him. Its polished face contrasts with the deliberately rough marble block surrounding it, where tool marks remain visible. The contrast recalls Michelangelo’s treatment of unfinished stone and reinforces the title’s suggestion of sunlight emerging at daybreak. The sculpture belongs to the Musée Rodin’s permanent collections in Paris, where it is listed on the first floor in room 11. The museum notes that works may occasionally be lent to other institutions, so the sculpture’s presence is not guaranteed on every visit. The museum is at 77 Rue de Varenne in Paris’s 7th arrondissement, with access via Varenne or Invalides metro stations. L’Aurore is a compact work, measuring 56 centimetres high, 61 centimetres wide and 30 centimetres deep. Its inventory number is S.01019.
