Chiesa dell’Ascensione di Nostro Signore Gesù Cristo is a Catholic parish church on Via Giovanni da Empoli in Florence. The parish community was established in 1971, during the city’s urban expansion to the north-west, between the Mugnone and Terzolle rivers and the railway network. Designed by architects Lando Bartoli and Velio Mazzei, the church was built between 1975 and 1978. It was inaugurated on 21 October 1978 and consecrated on 5 May 1979 by Florence’s Archbishop Giovanni Benelli. The building has a single main hall with the presbytery positioned to the side of the entrance. Inside are relics associated with several saints, including John Gualbert, Antoninus Pierozzi, Philip Neri, Aloysius Gonzaga, Mary Magdalene de’ Pazzi and John Bosco. A large crucifix by Umberto Bartoli dates from 1979. The church also includes a weekday chapel with older devotional works, parish oratory rooms, classrooms, meeting spaces and a library. This is a working neighbourhood parish rather than one of Florence’s major historic tourist monuments; visitors should respect worship and parish activities.
