Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia

The Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia opened in December 1998 on Jalan Lembah Perdana, on the edge of the Perdana Botanical Garden and immediately next to Masjid Negara, the national mosque. The museum describes itself as Southeast Asia's largest museum of Islamic art, occupying some 30,000 square metres and holding more than 10,000 artefacts, with a further collection of Islamic art books held in its Scholar's Library. Its collecting policy is the thing that distinguishes it from the better-known Islamic collections in Europe and the Gulf.

The permanent collection is spread over twelve galleries on two floors, and the museum publishes a recommended order rather than leaving visitors to wander. It starts on the first floor with the Architecture and the Qur'an & Manuscript galleries, then continues through the India, China and Malay World galleries — the three the museum treats as its own particular contribution. The Architecture Gallery answers the problem of displaying buildings with scale models, including Mecca's Masjid al-Haram, described by the museum as one of the world's largest models of that mosque, alongside the Taj Mahal, Central Asian mausoleums for Timur and Amir Albukhari, and a mosque in Xian. A tile wall gathers tilework from across the Islamic world.

Allow two and a half hours for the twelve permanent galleries at a pace that lets you read the panels, and three if a special exhibition is running in Special Galleries 1 and 2. The museum does not publish a suggested visit length, so that figure is judgement rather than a recorded fact — but the shape of the building supports it. Twelve galleries over two floors, arranged in a circuit the museum itself sequences, is a larger walk than the single-hall museums elsewhere in the Lake Gardens.

Daily 09:30–18:00; last entry 17:30. During Ramadan: 09:30–17:00. Closed on Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Hari Raya Aidiladha. The museum is open seven days a week from 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM, with last entry at 5:30 PM, and there is no weekly closing day — unusual among museums of this size and the single most useful thing to know when building an itinerary around it. There are two exceptions, and both are movable. The museum states that it closes only on Hari Raya Aidilfitri and Hari Raya Aidiladha.

General adult admission is RM20. Tickets are sold at the Customer Service counter in the lobby. Tickets are bought at the Customer Service counter in the Lobby on arrival. The museum states that no booking is required for a general visit, and there is no online advance ticket for ordinary entry. The published rates are per person: adults RM20; students RM10; Malaysian senior citizens RM10; non-Malaysian senior citizens RM20; and children under six free. The distinction between Malaysian and non-Malaysian seniors is real and worth reading twice, because a foreign visitor over 65 pays the full adult rate rather than the concession. Students must show valid identification when buying the ticket. Payment is accepted in cash or by card. That is the whole published tariff.

Kuala Lumpur station, served by KTM Komuter and ETS, is about a 5-minute walk via Masjid Negara. Pasar Seni station, served by LRT and MRT, is about a 10-minute walk via Masjid Negara. The free GOKL CityBus Red Route stops at Masjid Negara and Dayabumi. For taxi or e-hailing arrival, use “Islamic Arts Museum Malaysia (Front Entrance)” or “Muzium Kesenian Islam Malaysia (Pintu Hadapan)” as the destination. No car is needed. The museum sits at Jalan Lembah Perdana, 50480 Kuala Lumpur, and the nearest rail stations are close enough to walk from in the heat. Kuala Lumpur station, served by KTM Komuter and ETS, is a five-minute walk past Masjid Negara — the shortest approach.

The Jalan Lembah Perdana main entrance has step-free access and a wide automatic sliding door. Lifts connect the lower-ground lobby with the Ground and First Floors. A ramp connects the First and Second Floors; additional lifts beside MOZA Restaurant serve the Ground, First and Second Floors. Wheelchair-accessible toilets are available on the Ground Floor. Benches are provided throughout the permanent galleries. The approach is the part people get wrong. The museum stands inside the Perdana Botanical Garden area beside Masjid Negara, and the walk from either rail station is across open, largely unshaded ground; in Kuala Lumpur's midday heat a five-minute walk is not a trivial one. Carry water and expect to arrive warm.

The museum publishes a policy for organised shoots but not one for a visitor with a phone, and that gap is worth stating plainly rather than guessing at. What it does say is that its airy interior makes it a favoured location for filming and photography, that it welcomes all non-commercial filming and photographic shoots as well as documentaries and interviews, that requests should be made two weeks in advance in writing, and that all filming and photography inside the museum is supervised by an experienced member of staff. Anything with a tripod, a crew or a commercial purpose therefore needs arranging before the visit.
