The Eternal Flame (Вечна ватра) is a memorial in Belgrade’s Park of Friendship, also known as Friendship Park, in New Belgrade. The monument commemorates military and civilian victims of the 1999 NATO bombing of Yugoslavia. It was erected in 2000, on the first anniversary of the end of the bombing campaign. The memorial is designed as an obelisk and stands along the park’s Avenue of Peace. Its location places it within the Ušće area, near the confluence of the Sava and Danube rivers and close to the Palace of Serbia. The monument’s history is connected with the political and memorial landscape of post-1999 Belgrade; later public discussion also concerned its status and meaning after the political changes of 2000. Today, the Eternal Flame is an outdoor memorial in a large riverside park rather than an indoor museum or exhibition. Visitors can combine the stop with a walk through Park of Friendship and the wider Ušće district, where modernist civic buildings, the riverside and other memorial sites form a concentrated part of New Belgrade’s urban landscape.
