The Monument to Vasa Čarapić is a memorial in Belgrade’s Stari Grad municipality, listed among the city’s protected memorial sites. It stands on the square in front of the former Officers’ House, close to the National Theatre and the central pedestrian area. The monument commemorates Vasa Čarapić, a Serbian voivode and participant in the First Serbian Uprising against the Ottoman Empire. Čarapić was born in Beli Potok and became known as the “Dragon of Avala”. During the Serbian attack on Belgrade in 1806, he was fatally wounded at the Istanbul Gate, the historic entrance associated with the present central-city location. He died after being carried to Karađorđe’s tent and was later buried at Rakovica Monastery, according to biographical accounts. The memorial therefore marks both a person and a decisive episode in Belgrade’s modern history: the uprising’s effort to capture the Ottoman-held city. Its public setting makes it a short, open-air heritage stop rather than a museum visit. The monument can be combined with the National Theatre, Republic Square and nearby historic streets on a walk through central Belgrade.
