Lumphini Park

Lumphini Park is Bangkok's oldest public park, 360 rai — about 57.6 hectares — of lake, lawn and rain tree in Pathum Wan, wedged between the Silom and Sathorn office towers and Rama IV Road. King Rama VI gave the land, then known as Thung Sala Daeng, in 1925, and the park takes its name from Lumbini, the Buddha's birthplace in Nepal. Managed by the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration's Department of Environment, it is open 04:30 to 22:00 every day of the week. Daily 04:30–22:00. Open every day with no regular closure day. Cycling is permitted from 10:00 to 15:00.

The lake is the centre of the park, with swan paddle boats for hire along its bank, and a broad path circuits it. A statue of King Vajiravudh, built in 1942 to commemorate the park's construction, faces the main Rama IV Road entrance. A Chinese-styled clock tower dating from 1925 stands in the grounds, as does what was Bangkok's first public library, alongside playgrounds and a swimming pool. Allow an hour. That covers a circuit of the lake at an unhurried pace, a stop on a bench, and the detour anyone ends up making the first time a monitor lizard crosses the path. The monitor lizards are wild animals, not an exhibit. They are large, they are fast over short distances, and they have a serious bite; give way when one crosses, do not corner one between the path and the water, and do not feed them. The picture Lumphini gives that no other Bangkok park can is the office skyline of Silom and Sathorn stacked above the lake and the rain trees; the north bank in late afternoon puts the towers in warm light with the water in front of them, and the same view after sunset holds the lit windows. The monitor lizards want a long lens and distance rather than a phone at two metres. Morning mist over the water is occasional, not reliable. Cycling is permitted daily from 10:00 to 15:00.
