Church of St. George

The Church of St George in Fener is the cathedral of the Ecumenical Patriarchate of Constantinople, the senior see of the Orthodox Christian world, and from the street it is deliberately unassuming. Patriarch Matthew II moved the Patriarchate here, to the former convent of St George in the Phanar, in 1597. The church has been rebuilt more often than most cathedrals are repaired. The plan is a three-aisled basilica with three semicircular apses on the east side and a transverse narthex on the west. The floor area is modest, and the modesty is historically the point: Ottoman rule limited what a non-Muslim building was permitted to look like from the outside, so the ambition went inward. The interior is dark, gold and lit by hanging lamps, and that is the whole of the difficulty. There is very little ambient light, flash is unacceptable, and a tripod is out of the question in a working cathedral. Push the sensitivity, brace a shoulder against a column, and photograph the iconostasis as one whole rather than hunting details you have no chance of holding steady. The warm cast thrown by the lamps is the character of the room; correcting it to neutral in editing throws the picture away along with the fault.
