Gezi Park

Gezi Park is a terraced park of four hectares — 9.88 acres — occupying the ground immediately north of Taksim Square in Beyoğlu. It is small, it is built into a slope, and it contains no attraction: steps, planting, benches and trees are the whole of it. Its significance is entirely historical and political. The site held the Halil Pasha Artillery Barracks, built in 1806, whose drill ground was converted into Taksim Stadium in 1921. Yes. Physically: terraces, steps, mature trees and benches, with no building, monument or enclosure to visit. The northern section of the ground was formerly the Pangaltı Armenian Cemetery, in use from 1560 to 1939; sixteen tombstones from it were found during excavations in 2013. Those 2013 excavations are why the park is known worldwide. A plan to replace it with a shopping mall and possible residence — a reconstruction of the demolished barracks — triggered protests that began on 28 May 2013. No regular gate closure applies. Twenty-five minutes. That is enough to climb the steps from the square, walk the terraces end to end, sit for a few minutes on one of the upper benches looking back down at Taksim, and leave. There is no exhibit, no interior and no circuit longer than a few hundred metres. Most people who come here deliberately are coming for what happened rather than what stands, and the standing part does not take long to read. Yes on main routes.

The park does not photograph well and there is no point pretending otherwise: it is trees, steps and benches, with no landmark inside its boundary to build a picture around. Anyone hunting a photograph should turn round. The view is outward and downward. From the upper terraces the whole of Taksim Square lies below with the crowd moving across it, and that is the frame worth taking — a raised, slightly detached vantage on one of the busiest public spaces in the country.
