Great Palace Mosaic Museum

Beneath the Arasta Bazaar, the row of shops behind the Blue Mosque, lies a strip of floor that belonged to the Great Palace of Constantinople. It is the pavement of a peristyle courtyard in the palace's south-western quarter — a courtyard whose mosaic floor originally covered 1,872 square metres, of which roughly 180 survive. On that surviving stretch about 150 human and animal figures remain, spread across some 90 themes. The dating is contested in the ordinary scholarly way. Yes under the regular schedule. The floor is not a religious programme, and that is what makes it strange. It is a secular pavement of country life and spectacle, laid for people who lived inside a palace: hunts, shepherds among their animals, children at their games, riders on elephants and camels, lions, eagles and griffins, and a Dionysian procession in which an elephant walks beside a woman carrying a jug. Forty-five minutes, and that is a generous reading of one hall. There is a single gallery and a single walkway. The visit is a slow pass along the pavement panel by panel, then a second pass in the other direction to catch what the first angle concealed. A pavement seen from above is a hard subject. The light is fixed, the surface is flat, the palette is muted, and a wide shot of the whole floor produces a picture of texture rather than of anything in particular. The mosaics reward tight framing on single figures — the elephant, the shepherd's sheep, the head of a griffin — at a scale where the tesserae read as individual handmade pieces. The walkway fixes your distance and you cannot get closer, so a short telephoto does more work here than a wide angle.
