Istanbul Modern opened on 11 December 2004 as Turkey's first museum of modern and contemporary art, installed in Entrepo No. 4, a customs warehouse from the 1950s standing on the Karaköy quay. When the Galataport scheme rebuilt that whole stretch of waterfront the museum moved inland for four years, into an 1896 building by Alexander Vallaury that had housed the Union Française, and then came back to the water. The plan is vertical and easy to read. Two floors are given over to exhibitions — the long survey of Turkish art since 1950 on one, a changing temporary programme on the other — and a separate photography gallery treats the medium on its own terms rather than folding it into the painting hang. Beyond the galleries the building carries a cinema, a library, education workshops, event spaces, a design shop, a restaurant and a café. Two hours is the honest figure, and it is what this guide books. The building photographs better than the art. The three hundred aluminium modules on the facade are the subject: they are concave and convex in alternation, so a shot taken square-on flattens them and a shot taken at a sharp raking angle makes the whole wall read as a rippling surface.
