The museum occupies the Has Ahırlar, the former imperial stables, a long low range on the edge of Gülhane Park below the Topkapı walls, and it opened on 25 May 2008 under the Ministry of Culture and Tourism. It is a museum of reconstructions rather than of relics: what fills its cases are working replicas of instruments, machines and models described in ninth- to sixteenth-century Arabic and Persian scientific manuscripts. The Ministry's own page divides the museum into twelve areas: astronomy, clocks and timekeeping, maritime technology, war technology, medicine, mining, physics, mathematics and geometry, architecture and city planning, chemistry and optics, geography, and a cinevision screening room. Roughly 570 reconstructed instruments, models and maquettes fill about 3,500 square metres of the stable range. The showpiece is al-Jazari's elephant clock, rebuilt at full height. Allow 90 minutes. This is not a walk-through museum where a room registers in a glance; it is roughly 570 discrete objects, each of which only means anything once its label has been read and its mechanism worked out. Skimming it at gallery pace takes half an hour and leaves nothing behind. The twelve sections are uneven in draw. Astronomy, clocks and the war technology room hold most people longest; the geography section rewards anyone interested in early mapping and is quickly passed by everyone else. Almost everything here is brass, wood and glass behind more glass, which makes reflections the whole problem. Getting the lens close to the case and shooting slightly off-axis kills most of them; a polariser kills the rest. The case lighting is warm and directional, so white balance set to daylight will render everything orange. The elephant clock is the one object that needs height rather than width — step well back and shoot upward, or accept a crop.
