Miniatürk opened on 2 May 2003 on the northeastern shore of the Golden Horn, and the idea behind it is straightforward: shrink the architecture of Turkey and the former Ottoman world to one twenty-fifth of full size and lay it out where a person can walk among it. The site covers 60,000 square metres, of which 15,000 are given over to the models themselves, 40,000 to open space, 3,500 to covered buildings and 2,000 to pools and waterways. There are 135 models at 1:25 scale, and the way they are divided says a lot about the park's intentions. Sixty are structures from Istanbul, sixty-three from the rest of Anatolia, and thirteen from former Ottoman territories that now lie outside Turkey. That last group is the one that surprises people, because it puts buildings in modern Balkan and Middle Eastern countries alongside the Süleymaniye and gives the collection a reach the city itself does not have. Two hours for an adult who intends to walk the whole thing and read the labels. The circuit through the model area runs well over a kilometre and the models are spread across 15,000 square metres, so the time is dictated by distance rather than by depth — there is no queue at any individual exhibit, just a lot of ground. Shot from an adult's standing height, a 1:25 building looks exactly like what it is, a toy seen from above.
