Pammakaristos Church

The Pammakaristos was the Greek Orthodox Patriarchate for 131 years after the fall of Constantinople, and its side chapel holds mosaics second only to the Chora's. Most scholars put the church in the eleventh or twelfth century; many attribute it to Michael VII Ducas, who reigned 1071 to 1078, though other datings run from the Comnenian period back to the eighth century. The parekklesion, and the rest of the building is a mosque. The side chapel was added in the early Palaiologan period and dedicated to Christ the Word. Shortly after 1310 Martha Glabas commissioned it as a shrine to her dead husband, the general Michael Doukas Glabas Tarchaneiotes — the same generation and the same court that paid for the Chora a few streets away. Its mosaics survive in restored panels: Christ Pantocrator ringed by Old Testament prophets in the dome, and scenes including the Baptism of Christ. Base public or worship access is free. Forty-five minutes, and the chapel is the whole of it. The parekklesion is one small room and reading its mosaics properly takes half an hour. The mosque next door takes ten minutes. Çarşamba is a conservative quarter in the middle of Fatih, well away from the tram. The natural combination is with the Chora at Edirnekapı, twenty minutes further west, which puts the two great late Byzantine mosaic cycles in one trip. The dome of the parekklesion — Christ Pantocrator ringed by prophets — is the photograph, and it is directly overhead in a small room, which makes a wide lens necessary rather than useful. The chapel is dim and the mosaics are gold-ground; expose for the gold and accept dark walls around it. Photography rules in the museum section are not published on the sources this page uses.
