Pera Museum

Pera Museum is a private art museum on the Beyoğlu ridge, established on 8 June 2005 by the Suna and İnan Kıraç Foundation. Its building was not built as a museum. It opened in 1893 as the Bristol Hotel, designed by the architect Achille Manoussos, and it served the traffic of what was then the Grande Rue de Péra. Between 2003 and 2005 the architect Sinan Genim preserved the facade of the building and transformed the interior into a modern and fully equipped museum. Monday. Three permanent collections form the museum's core. The Orientalist Painting collection gathers European, Ottoman and Turkish artists, and its centrepiece is Osman Hamdi Bey's The Tortoise Trainer, the painter's most famous work: an elderly man in traditional Ottoman religious costume, holding a ney flute and carrying a nakkare drum, attempting to train five tortoises that ignore him entirely and eat green leaves instead. It has been read ever since as a comment on the slow and ineffective reform of the Ottoman Empire. 12:00-18:00. Ninety minutes covers the three permanent collections plus one temporary show, which is how most visitors actually use the building. The permanent floors are compact, and the weights and measures in particular reward one slow pass rather than a long circuit. The variable is the temporary programme, which rotates several times a year, so what is on the upper floors can add half an hour or almost nothing. Where photography is permitted, this is an ordinary low-light gallery problem and nothing more exotic: no flash, no tripod, steady hands, a fast lens and a raised sensitivity. The Tortoise Trainer sits behind glass and is lit from above, so reflection is the enemy. Stand off the centre line and shoot at a slight angle, or accept the lamp in the frame and crop around it. The Kütahya ceramics in their cases are worse for reflections still, and putting the lens close to the glass, where that is allowed, is the only genuinely clean solution.
