Yedikule Fortress

Yedikule is a fortress built out of an older monument. Sultan Mehmed II raised it in 1458, five years after the conquest, and he did it by taking a stretch of the Theodosian land walls, adding three new towers to four that already stood, and closing the whole thing into an almost pentagonal enclosure. The result is seven towers - yedi kule - welded onto the city's Roman defences. The four older towers include the twin towers of the Golden Gate, the triumphal entrance built by the Roman emperors Theodosius I and Theodosius II. Monday. The picture everyone wants is the Golden Gate's marble seen from inside the enclosure, with the Ottoman towers framing Roman stone.
