Dubai Gold Souk

Deira Gold Souk is an open-air jewellery market in Al Ras, at the northern end of Deira, a few hundred metres back from the Dubai Creek waterfront. It is a working trading district rather than an attraction built for visitors: more than 380 retailers hold shops here, most of them jewellery traders, and they deal in gold, platinum and silver jewellery and in bullion, with loose diamonds and coloured stones sold alongside. Daily 10:00–22:00. The operator publishes daily shop hours, so there is no weekly closure day.

The souk is a grid of narrow lanes lined on both sides with shopfronts, and the effect at eye level is unbroken window display: long runs of market stalls and shop windows showing bangles, chains, necklace sets and rings in a wide range of carats and in designs drawn from across the region and beyond. Prices are not fixed. The souk does not stand alone. The operator publishes daily shop hours, so there is no weekly closure day. Allow an hour. Walking the main lane from one end to the other and back, stopping at the windows that catch the eye, is the whole of the visit for most people, and an hour covers it at a pace that is not a march. This site records sixty minutes as the visit duration; Dubai's official tourism page publishes no recommended duration for the souk, so that figure is judgement rather than a quoted value. An hour is the browsing figure.

Come in the evening. Dubai's official tourism site states that most shops in the Gold Souk keep hours of 10am to 10pm, and it suggests that although the area is shaded the best time to visit is around sunset. Two limits are worth knowing before setting a time. Daily 10:00–22:00. RTA states that Dubai Metro stations have electric elevators, wheelchair-width side gates and tactile guidance. There is nothing to buy at the entrance. Dubai's official tourism site states plainly that the Gold Souk is free to visit: there is no gate, no ticket, no timed entry and nothing to book in advance. No car is needed and the metro is the simplest way in. Dubai's official tourism site places the souk about five minutes on foot from both Al Ras and Gold Souq stations, which are neighbouring stops on the Green Line. The pleasant approach is the water. Al Ras and Gold Souq Metro stations are on the Green Line and each is approximately a five-minute walk away. Gold Souq Bus Station and Al Ras bus stop are also within walking distance. From Bur Dubai, take an abra from Bur Dubai Abra Station to Deira Old Souk Abra Station. Taxis drop passengers at Hind Plaza.

The main thing to hold in mind is the boundary of the government guarantee. Dubai's official tourism site says the merchandise in the souk is regulated to ensure authenticity, and that assurance attaches to the licensed retailers in their shops. The published hours are a range for most shops, not a promise about any one of them. Heat is the physical hazard. The historic souk consists of independent shopfronts; official accessibility information covers the public-transport approach but does not establish step-free entry to every retailer.

The light problem here is contrast. The lanes are shaded and the windows behind the glass are lit hard, so a camera metering for the street blows the displays out and a camera metering for the gold turns the lane black. Exposing for the shopfront and letting the lane go dark is usually the better of the two, and the hour around sunset that the official site recommends for visiting is also the hour when the difference between the two is smallest.
