About Bezirksmuseum Margareten

Bezirksmuseum Margareten documents the history and residents of Vienna’s 5th district. Located in the district office near historic Margaretenplatz, it is one of Vienna’s younger district museums. The collection places particular emphasis on photographs and biographical stories. Distinctive objects include a steel vault installed around 1900 for a City of Vienna savings-bank branch, exhibits from a cooper’s workshop and material from Anton Budil’s amber workshop. Current exhibition listings include Ignaz Gridl – Industriepionier aus Margareten through 22 October 2026 and Im Wiener Bücherpalast, about Gridl’s iron structure for the University of Vienna library, through the same date.

Regular opening is Thursday from 16:00 to 19:00, with other appointments available by telephone or email. The museum closes during school holidays and on public holidays, so the Thursday schedule does not apply throughout the year. Admission to Vienna’s district museums is free.
