Carré Marigny is a historic garden square within the Jardins des Champs-Élysées in Paris’s 8th arrondissement. It occupies the northern part of the gardens, alongside the Carré de l’Élysée and Carré des Ambassadeurs, near the Avenue des Champs-Élysées and Avenue Marigny. The square was created in 1835 by architect Jacques Hittorff and landscaped from 1859 under Adolphe Alphand. Its design reflects the Haussmann-era style, with curved paths, gently rolling lawns and flowerbeds. The name commemorates Abel Poisson de Vandières, Marquis de Marigny, who served as Louis XV’s Director of Buildings and helped create the Avenue de Marigny. The landscaping frames several historic features, including the Fontaine des Quatre Saisons, the Théâtre Marigny and the Laurent restaurant. The Théâtre Marigny was designed by Charles Garnier in 1883, while the square’s western side formerly held the Cirque d’Été until 1900. Carré Marigny is also associated with Paris’s Marché aux Timbres, an open-air stamp market held at the angle of Avenue Marigny and Avenue Gabriel. It works well as a short stop during a walk between the Champs-Élysées, Place de la Concorde and nearby gardens.
