Jardins de l’Élysée are the historic gardens of the Palais de l’Élysée, the French presidential palace at 55 rue du Faubourg-Saint-Honoré in Paris’s 8th arrondissement. The grounds began as a formal French-style garden, arranged with interlaced greenery and quadrilateral gravel paths. In the late eighteenth century, the Duchess de Bourbon redesigned the garden in the English style, adding broad lawns, winding paths, an irregular pond, a green theatre and a rocky bridge. Earlier attractions included a grotto, waterfall, maze, animals, a swing and rowing boats. During the nineteenth century, these attractions disappeared and the gardens developed their present character: predominantly English in layout, with French details such as the knot-garden box hedges near the private wing. The official Élysée website provides a virtual tour of the grounds, including views of the park, greenhouse and Cock Grid. The gardens form part of the palace complex rather than a conventional public park. The presidency’s visitor information should be checked before planning an in-person visit, since access to the palace and grounds is arranged separately from ordinary Paris park visits.
