Augustiner-Keller

Augustiner-Keller is the large Augustiner restaurant and beer-garden complex at Arnulfstraße 52, west of Munich Hauptbahnhof. It is not Augustiner Stammhaus in the old-town pedestrian zone: the two venues have different addresses, rooms, menus and operating information. The operator traces the Keller site to a storage cellar built outside the city walls in 1808. The ground above the cellar had become an excursion destination by 1812, when visitors could drink beer drawn from wooden barrels during the warmer months. Josef Wagner, then owner of the Augustiner brewery, acquired the cellar in 1862. After brewing moved from central Munich toward Landsberger Straße in the late nineteenth century, the Keller ceased to function primarily as beer storage but remained a hospitality venue. That history explains the present combination of underground cellar, indoor restaurant rooms, terraces and a tree-covered beer garden rather than a single conventional dining room.

Choose the part of Augustiner-Keller that matches the meal rather than treating the property as one interchangeable room. The Bierstüberl is a sixty-seat corner room with old paintings and heavy chandeliers, suited to visitors who want a smaller indoor setting for lunch or an evening meal. Other named rooms support larger gatherings and different atmospheres. These distinctions matter when choosing between a full restaurant meal, a smaller indoor room and an outdoor beer-garden visit. Confirm the room attached to a booking, and do not assume that an opening notice or reservation for one named area covers every other part of the site.
