About Matthias Church

The Church of Our Lady of Buda Castle, known to almost everyone as Matthias Church, stands on Szentháromság tér at the top of the castle hill in Buda. The parish dates its own foundation to 1246 or 1247, on the strength of a charter of the Veszprém cathedral chapter that mentions a church already under construction in 1247. Three Hungarian coronations happened inside it: Charles I with a provisional crown in 1309, Franz Joseph and Elisabeth in 1867, and Charles IV in 1916, which was the last coronation of a Hungarian king. Church tickets can be used within their calendar year; tower tickets are valid only for the selected timed tour. The main church floor can support reduced-mobility visits with staff routing, but historic thresholds and liturgical closures apply. The tower is not accessible: its panorama requires 197 stairs and has no lift or toilet.

What's inside

The route runs across a ground floor and a first-floor gallery, and the church museum built into the upper level is part of the ticket rather than a separate attraction. That museum was founded in 1964 by Rector János Tóth to put the church's art collection on show, and it is the reason a visit here is longer than a look down a nave.
