About Hungarian Parliament Building

Országház — House of the Country — is the seat of the National Assembly of Hungary and the largest building in the country. It stands on Kossuth Lajos tér on the Pest bank of the Danube, and it exists because Buda, Óbuda and Pest were joined into one city in 1873 and the Diet decided seven years later that the new capital needed a parliament that stated the nation's sovereignty. What's inside

The building is symmetrical inside as well as out, with two identical chambers on opposite sides of a central hall. The National Assembly has been unicameral since the Second World War, so it sits in the former Lower House and the former Upper House is left to ceremonies, conferences and the guided tour. Between them is the hexadecagonal central hall, and since 2000 the Holy Crown of Hungary — the crown drawn in the national coat of arms — has stood there. The standard visitor route lasts about 45 minutes, plus security and check-in time.

How long to spend

Allow about ninety minutes on site. Entry is not a walk-in: the OpenStreetMap record for the building says a reservation is required, and access is by escorted group rather than by wandering. The building was designed to be seen from the water, and the best position is therefore not on the same bank. Cross to Buda and walk the embankment between the Chain Bridge and the Margaret Bridge: from there the whole 268-metre front and the dome compose in one frame, which is impossible from Kossuth Lajos tér, where a visitor stands too close and too low.
