Outer Sava Gate is the outer part of the Sava Gate complex on the southern approach to Belgrade Fortress. The fortress operator presents the surviving route under the broader name Sava Gate, describing it as the historic approach that followed the Sava river toward the Western Suburb and then the Lower Town. Do not confuse it with Dark Gate farther along the same defensive zone or with Outer Stambol Gate on the fortress’s main landward approach.

The gateway complex developed through several building phases. A medieval Southern Gate existed here in the time of Emperor Stefan Dušan. During works directed by Andrea Cornaro in the late seventeenth century, the earlier gate was widened and incorporated into new defences. After the Austrian fortifications were demolished in 1740, Ottoman reconstruction added a new Sava Gate closer to Dark Gate.

Sava Gate remained one of the fortress’s better-preserved structures until Anglo-American bombing destroyed it in April 1944. Archaeological excavation in 2007 cleared the ruins, after which the gate was partially reconstructed and the route was made passable again. Approach it as an outdoor archaeological passage connecting the Karađorđeva Street side with the Lower Town, not as a staffed museum room. The attraction hours and ticket prices published for the Roman Well, Nebojša Tower or other managed fortress interiors do not apply to this gate. No gate-specific admission fee or opening schedule is published. Check current site notices before relying on the passage, particularly during conservation or infrastructure works.
