La Boqueria Market

The Mercat de Sant Josep de la Boqueria is a working public food market in the Ciutat Vella district, entered from La Rambla a few doors from the Liceu opera house. Its own history pages trace selling on this ground to 1217, when documents record meat tables at the Pla de la Boqueria among the travelling markets of La Rambla; the name is thought to come from the Catalan boc, a goat, so a boqueria was a place goat meat was sold. Two things make this market photograph well, and both are structural. The first is the entrance: the modernista arch onto La Rambla, designed by Antoni de Falguera and put up in 1913, restored in 2013, with the metal roof of 1914 behind it.
