Khaosan Road

Khao San Road is a 410-metre street in Phra Nakhon, a few minutes' walk from the Chao Phraya, whose name means milled rice and whose reputation has nothing to do with rice. It is not a sight in the sense that a temple is a sight — there is nothing to look at that stands still. It is a public street, open at all hours, with nothing to pay to walk down. Along 410 metres: guesthouses and hostels above shophouses, bars with pavement seating, massage shops, stalls selling clothing and counterfeit merchandise, and carts working pad thai, mango sticky rice, grilled meat and the fried-insect tray that exists mostly to be photographed. The street's current shape is recent and municipal. That is why the stalls a visitor sees at noon are not the ones there at midnight. Soi Rambuttri, curving around the block to the north, carries the same trade at a lower volume.

Allow an hour. The street is 410 metres, so walking it end to end and back takes fifteen minutes without stopping; the hour assumes a stop — a plate from a cart, a drink at a pavement table, a look down Soi Rambuttri. The standard approach is by river: the Chao Phraya express boat to Phra Athit pier, then a walk of a few minutes inland. Bus routes 2, 3, 15, 47 and 59 serve the area. Take the Chao Phraya Tourist Boat to N13 Phra Arthit Pier. The operator directs visitors to turn left from the pier, pass Phra Sumen Fort for about 500 metres, cross Chakrabongse intersection, turn right and continue about 500 metres; Khaosan Road is on the left. Khao San concentrates the city's tourist-facing scams because it concentrates first-time arrivals. The recurring ones are the fixed-price tuk-tuk tour that ends at a gem or tailor shop, the bar bill that grows between the order and the payment, and drinks left unattended on a pavement table.
