Aspendos

Aspendos is a ruined Pamphylian and Roman city standing on two low hills above the Eurymedon, the river now called the Köprüçay, in Belkıs Mahallesi in the Serik district of Antalya province. It is run as a ticketed archaeological site by Türkiye's Ministry of Culture and Tourism, which publishes its hours and its admission price on muze.gov.tr. That survival is not an accident of climate. Daily 08:00–18:45. Night-museum visiting daily 19:00–21:30. The regular ticket office closes at 18:45. The operator lists the night ticket office as closing at 22:00. No weekly closure day; open every day.

The site divides into a lower and an upper city, and the ticket covers both. The theatre and the stadion are in the lower city; the theatre is the one building that is essentially complete, with its stage wall, its vaulted substructures and its full sweep of seating intact, so it is walked into rather than reconstructed in the head. Ninety minutes is the working figure, and it is the duration recorded for this place. It splits roughly in half. The theatre absorbs thirty to forty minutes if the visit includes climbing to the top row, sitting through the acoustics — someone will always test them — walking the vaulted galleries behind the seating and looking at the stage wall from the orchestra floor. General admission for foreign visitors is €15. Turkish citizens enter with Müzekart; the night-museum visit is excluded from museum passes, and the operator lists a 200 TRY night ticket for Turkish-ID Müzekart holders.

The ministry's page publishes one set of hours with no seasonal split: open every day, opening at 08:00, closing at 22:00, with the box office closing at 21:30. There is no weekly closed day, which is unusual for a Turkish state site and means Aspendos fits into a Monday when museums elsewhere are shut. Daily 08:00–18:45. Drivers coming from Antalya, Belek or Side all approach on the D400 and turn inland at the signposted junction. Aspendos is in Belkıs Mahallesi near Serik. From the Antalya–Alanya highway, turn north at approximately kilometre 44 and continue for about 2 km to the archaeological site; the site is about 8 km east of Serik. Officially listed facilities are car parking, restrooms and a shop.

Heat is the real hazard here, not the ruins. The upper city is open ground with no shade at all, the theatre's seating is stone that holds the afternoon sun, and there is no natural cover between the two. Carry more water than seems necessary, and treat a midsummer midday arrival as a decision to see the theatre only. The theatre is at the lower part of the site, but the agora, basilica, monumental fountain, council building, arch, street and Hellenistic temple occupy the hill above it; the complete archaeological site is therefore not step-free.

The theatre offers three distinct frames and they are worth treating separately. From the top row the whole cavea and the stage wall fit in one wide shot, and this is the picture that shows the building's completeness; a person standing on the orchestra floor gives it the scale it otherwise lacks.
