Theodosius Cistern

Şerefiye Sarnıcı is a Roman water tank that spent most of the last three centuries with a building sitting on top of it. Theodosius II, who reigned from 402 to 450, had it cut between 428 and 443 to hold water arriving on the Valens Aqueduct, and from here the supply was redistributed to the Nymphaeum, the Baths of Zeuxippus and the Great Palace of Constantinople. The chamber measures 40 metres by 20 and stands 11 high — a single rectangular room, not a forest anyone gets lost in. Thirty-two marble columns of roughly 11 metres carry 45 sail vaults above them. Every capital is Corinthian, cut with stylised acanthus and finished with an impost block, and the marble came from Marmara Island.
