Manchester City Council describes Deansgate as one of the city’s most historic streets. During the Roman occupation, its route connected fords across the River Medlock and River Irwell. The name probably emerged in the Anglo-Saxon period and initially applied between today’s Cateaton Street and Peter Street junctions. The southern stretch was once called Aldport Lane and adopted the Deansgate name in Victorian times. The council’s Castlefield history explains that the Roman fort of Mamucium stood on raised ground near the Medlock–Irwell confluence, while the present street occupies the old northbound route.
