The House of the Heiligenstadt Testament is the historic Probusgasse residence now operated as the Beethoven Museum in Vienna’s 19th district. Ludwig van Beethoven spent part of his first summer stay in Heiligenstadt in rooms at this site while seeking relief for his worsening hearing disorder. In 1802, he wrote the Heiligenstadt Testament here: an unsent letter addressed to his brothers in which he described his despair about progressive deafness. The museum presents the house’s history, Beethoven’s move from Bonn to Vienna, his Heiligenstadt period, composing, performance, finances and legacy. Its displays combine documents, objects and music examples, including early hearing devices and a listening experience that recreates the decline of Beethoven’s hearing. The museum also connects the residence with works Beethoven developed or sketched during his Heiligenstadt stay, including the Eroica. The museum occupies 265 square metres and is arranged across 14 themed rooms. It stands at Probusgasse 6, in the Heiligenstadt area of Döbling.
