About Palais Schönburg

Palais Schönburg, also called Palais Starhemberg-Schönburg and Palais Schönburg-Hartenstein, is a Baroque palace at Rainergasse 11 in Vienna’s 4th district, Wieden. Gundaker Thomas Starhemberg commissioned the building between 1705 and 1706 from architect Johann Lucas von Hildebrandt on land held by the Starhemberg family since the fifteenth century. The palace changed hands in 1811, and the Schönburg-Hartenstein family acquired it around 1841, remodeling most rooms while preserving the library. The long, three-part building is surrounded by a 15,000-square-metre park and includes a formal vestibule, grand staircases and representative rooms. Restoration in 2007–2008 returned much of the property to its original condition, including the façade, roof and park. Palais Schönburg now operates as an event venue, with its rooms and garden available for private functions. It is therefore primarily an exterior and architectural sight for independent visitors; interior access depends on events or advance arrangements. The palace lies about one kilometre from the Vienna State Opera and is well placed for combining with sights around Wieden and Belvedere.
