About St. Anne's Church

St. Anne’s Church, also called Annakirche, is a Roman Catholic religious church at Annagasse 3b in Vienna’s Innere Stadt. The first church on the site was consecrated in 1518. Jesuits rebuilt and enlarged it between 1629 and 1633, creating the early Baroque structure seen today. A further high-Baroque redesign followed in the early eighteenth century under Christoph Tausch. The church’s interior is notable for its unified decoration, gilded architectural details, side chapels and barrel-vaulted nave. Daniel Gran created the ceiling frescoes, the high-altar painting and frescoes in the Franz Xaver Chapel during the eighteenth-century refurbishment. The church also contains an Anna Selbdritt sculpture attributed to Veit Stoß and a relic of Saint Anne’s right hand, originally brought from Istanbul. The Oblates of St. Francis de Sales have served the church since 1897, and Eucharistic adoration is offered daily. Its compact façade and tower stand within the narrow streets of Vienna’s historic centre, making the interior more significant than the understated exterior suggests.
