Chora Church

The Chora holds the best late Byzantine mosaic and fresco cycle anywhere, and it is a long way from the tram, which is why the people who go are the people who came for it. The building standing today is the one Maria Doukaina — mother-in-law of Alexius I Comnenus — rebuilt between 1077 and 1081 as an inscribed cross. What makes it famous came two and a half centuries later: Theodore Metochites paid for the mosaics and frescoes between about 1310 and 1317, in the last generation before the empire ended. Small rooms, high vaults, gold ground: this is the hardest interior in Istanbul to photograph and the most rewarding.
