The man who paid for this mosque was born Giovanni Dionigi Galeni in Le Castella, in Calabria, around 1519. Captured at sea in April 1536 when he was about seventeen and set to work at a galley oar, he converted to Islam, became a corsair by 1541, and on 7 October 1571 commanded the left wing of the Ottoman fleet at Lepanto — where he outmanoeuvred Giovanni Andrea Doria, took the flagship of the Knights of Malta and, when the day was lost, extracted his ships and gathered what was left of the fleet. Sinan built an admiral a mosque that looks back at Hagia Sophia. The central dome, 12.70 metres across, is carried on pendentives resting on granite piers, with two half-domes on the qibla axis and two exedrae beyond them — a plan closer to a Byzantine basilica than to Sinan's usual solutions, and the resemblance is deliberate.
