About Lower Belvedere
Lower Belvedere is the Vienna palace where Prince Eugene of Savoy lived, at the city end of the Belvedere grounds on Rennweg. Construction began in 1712 and the residence was completed in 1717, as part of the Baroque ensemble designed by Johann Lukas von Hildebrandt. The former residential palace now presents changing exhibitions, while the adjoining Orangery extends the museum complex. The Palace Stables, next to the Orangery, hold the Belvedere’s Study Collection of Middle Ages and Renaissance art. The collection includes the Salzburg Altar by the Late Gothic painter Rueland Frueauf the Elder. The Lower Belvedere also has a direct place in museum history: the Modern Gallery opened here in 1903, and the Austrian Baroque Museum opened in the palace in 1923. The Belvedere’s historic French-style garden lies between the Upper and Lower palaces, with the Kammergarten beside the Lower Belvedere. The museum entrance is at Rennweg 6; tram 71 stops at “Unteres Belvedere,” and tram D at “Gußhaustraße.”
