Pietà (Michelangelo) is the Vatican Pietà, a Carrara-marble sculpture in St Peter’s Basilica, Vatican City. Michelangelo made it between 1498 and 1499, when he was about twenty-three, after Cardinal Jean de Bilhères Lagraulas commissioned a Pietà for his tomb. The subject is the Virgin Mary holding the dead Christ in her arms. The work was first installed in the Chapel of Santa Petronilla, shortly before 1500, and was later moved to St Peter’s. Since the eighteenth century, it has been displayed to the right of the basilica’s nave, where visitors can see it as part of the basilica’s principal artworks. The sculpture is inside an active place of prayer, so the basilica asks visitors to remain silent and behave respectfully. Access is through St Peter’s Basilica rather than a separate entrance for the sculpture. The basilica’s official information page currently lists summer opening hours from 07:00 to 20:00, but liturgical activity and visitor arrangements can affect access. The Pietà is therefore best treated as a specific artwork within the larger basilica visit, alongside the building’s chapels, mosaics and other major works.
