Hunterian Art Gallery

The Hunterian Art Gallery holds the art collections of the University of Glasgow, and it is one venue of several that together make up The Hunterian, Scotland's oldest public museum. The institution began with the anatomist William Hunter, who died in 1783 and left his collections of coins, minerals, books, specimens and paintings to the university where he had studied. The building is not the Victorian one visitors picture when they hear the university's name. Tuesday–Sunday 10:00–17:00; closed Monday. Regular closure day: Monday. The Hunterian names its own headline works, and they are a fair guide to what is on the walls: Chardin's A Lady Taking Tea, Rembrandt's The Entombment, and Gavin Hamilton's Hector's Farewell to Andromache. Around them the gallery shows Whistler and Mackintosh, Rembrandt and Rubens, the Glasgow Boys and the Scottish Colourists, together with work by living artists. The Hunterian publishes no suggested visit length for the Art Gallery, so ninety minutes is this guide's editorial judgement rather than an operator figure. The gallery stands on Hillhead Street, beside the University Library on the university's Gilmorehill campus, about 3km west of Glasgow city centre. No car is needed and a car is the worst of the options. Buses 4 and 4A run from the city centre to University Avenue. The Mackintosh House is the part of this visit that defeats people. Buggies cannot go up either and are left on the ground floor. Photographs and video for personal use are welcome throughout. The Hunterian's stated conditions are narrow and easy to keep: no flash, and no tripods, monopods or selfie sticks. Professional photographers and film crews need permission in advance from the Hunterian communications office. Those rules shape what is worth attempting. The building rewards a camera more than the pictures do. Paolozzi's cast aluminium doors at the entrance are the best single shot on the site and take direct light in the afternoon.
