About Bezirksmuseum Innere Stadt

Bezirksmuseum Innere Stadt occupies the small courtyard of Vienna’s Old City Hall and follows the first district from the Roman period to the present. The first of its two display rooms covers the period through 1848, with Roman finds, medieval coins and vessels, a copy of the Tabula Peutingeriana and a fragment of the Old Pummerin bell. The second room covers 1848 onward, including a signed fan of Archduchess Valerie, Emperor Franz Joseph’s 1860 Venice passport, a ceremonial tin water cup used by the imperial couple, oak doors from the 1881 Ringtheater fire and a draft of the 28 July 1914 declaration of war. The museum also holds an archive and a library of more than 1,000 volumes on the first district, available with staff assistance during opening hours.

Admission is free. Regular opening is Monday 16:00–18:00 and Thursday 16:00–19:00; the museum closes during the summer and Christmas school holidays and on public holidays. The district museum network says appointments outside regular hours can be arranged by email or telephone. The current contact listing gives +43 1 4000 01127 and [email protected]. Enter through the left Old City Hall courtyard, the Museumshof, from Wipplingerstraße 8 or Stoß im Himmel; the operator lists the museum as step-free accessible. Check the current operator notice before travelling because holiday and special-opening exceptions apply.
