Sanjūsangen-dō Temple

Sanjusangen-do is the main hall of Rengeo-in, a Tendai temple in the Higashiyama ward of Kyoto, a few minutes south of the Kyoto National Museum. The temple states that the hall was founded inside Hojuji-dono, the retired emperor Go-Shirakawa's combined residence and court, and built with the material backing of Taira no Kiyomori, who was then at the height of his power. The hall holds 1,001 figures of Kannon. At the centre sits the great seated Senju Kannon carved by the Kamakura sculptor Tankei with his workshop: 355 centimetres tall, joined blocks of hinoki cypress, crystal inlaid eyes, lacquer and gold leaf over the whole body, forty-two arms standing for the thousand, on an eight-sided seven-tiered lotus throne. Around it, a thousand life-size standing Kannon are ranked on ten stepped tiers, front and back. JPY 600. Allow about forty-five minutes. The temple publishes no suggested visit length, so that figure is judgement rather than a quoted fact, but the shape of the place makes it a reliable one. The route through the hall is a single corridor: you enter at one end, walk the length of the tiers past the attendants and the seated Kannon, and come out the far end, and there is no way to double back through the crowd without swimming against it.
